Single Parent Champions busy raising awareness

Single Parent Champions busy raising awareness

Our Single Parent Champions have been very busy these last couple of months, raising awareness of single parent issues and experiences.

Appearing before the Welfare Reform Committee

In October, two of our Single Parent Champions went along to the Scottish Parliament to give evidence to the Welfare Reform Committee on their experience of applying to the Scottish Welfare Fund. Laura and Lana went along to give a personal account of their experiences and the experiences of other Single Parents affected by the changes in Welfare Reform.

Both parents had to opportunity to speak to the committee which resulted in greater understanding of the reality of making a claim to the Scottish Welfare Fund. Lana said:

“Before today, I never thought that I would be representing lone parents in the Scottish Parliament, I now feel that my opinion matters”.

Laura said:

“I am really excited to be involved in something that can make a difference to other lone parents”.

Poverty in Scotland Debate

In the run up the the general election, BBC Scotland are running a series of televised debates highlighting the main issues affecting the voters of Scotland. Three of our Single Parent Champions participated in the debate on Modern Poverty in Scotland held on 01 April 2015.

This was the first time that Margo, Lesley and Brooke had been involved in anything like this and they all thoroughly enjoyed the experience. They appreciated the opportunity to ask direct questions on issues that affect lone parents on a daily basis and to challenge the responses from the various parties on their policies to address poverty in Scotland.
